Managing your employees or your team in a way to reduce stress in the workplace could be highly beneficial to your company as a whole. Studies have shown that 91 million working days [1] are lost each year due to poor mental health and half of these days were lost due to stress or anxiety. Finding ways to both identify and ease stressful situations within your working environment could therefore not only protect your employees but also save your company money and time. Below are 5 ways in which you can manage your workforce and reduce stress. 1. Encourage lunch breaks Working through lunch breaks may be considered the necessary thing to do if the working environment is especially busy. However, this could be counter-productive to your workforce. Encouraging employees to take a break and step away from their desk for at least 30 minutes could mean they work much more productively in the afternoon. This is a chance for relaxing and reflection, in order for employees to recuperate from the morning work. Here are just a few activities to encourage employees to undertake on their lunch breaks:

  • Take a walk
  • Go for a run
  • Practice some yoga positions
  • Take a moment to do some deep breathing
  • Eat a healthy lunch
  • Find a quiet place to sit away from your desk

2. Create a breakaway space As an employer offering your employees a place to work away from their desk could prove productive. Giving people the opportunity to take themselves away from a potentially busy and noisy office and work quietly will enable them to focus and clear their mind. Look to large, successful companies such as Google  and Apple. Each of these has created office spaces that cater to different ways of working and different frames of mind. Breakout spaces are provided as well as group working environments. 3. Communicate Communication is the key to the smooth running of most businesses. When managing stress in the workplace, opening conversations between employees could not only mean identifying the problem but finding solutions too. Ensure, as a manager of employees, you remain approachable, calm and unbiased and create an atmosphere in which your employees feel safe to express themselves. 4.  Notice When communication is not proving beneficial, ensure you are aware of your workforce and the general atmosphere in the workplace. Notice when the working environment feels tense or stressful and make a note of when this is happening: what time of day, undertaking what type of work act. 5. Get everyone exercising Encouraging exercise to your employees not only promotes a healthy workforce but is also proven to reduce the impact of stress. Research has shown that regular exercise can not only reduce the risk of many serious illnesses from cancer to heart disease, it could also reduce the risk of mental illnesses including stress and depression [2]. Promote regular exercise within your workplace and you could boost the mood of your employees, improve sleep quality and increase their energy levels on a day-to-day basis. Some great ways to encourage exercise could be to:

  • Hold group exercise sessions
  • Offer discount to a local gym
  • Invite a yoga instructor into the workplace
  • Promote exercising on lunch breaks
