How the world of health and safety has changed...

We may take health and safety for granted these days. It is something that is very much part of our everyday lives and how we conduct our business. However, as the UK is now one of the safest places to work in the world, you have to wonder just how we managed this great success - especially given some of the photos below.

Below we show you a look into a world when business and the public weren’t so aware of health and safety.

An amazing picture, captured by Wales Online at Cardiff City stadium 1921, depicts a health and safety nightmare. The partially built Canton stadium has become a climbing frame for eager fans. We’re not sure what our Risk Assessment Software Solution would make of this, it would certainly have no problem identifying the hazards.

In March 1970, workers breakthrough from under the River Mersey, creating the Kingsway tunnel. The dark, dingy, conditions are only exaggerated by the lack of protective gear, in particular the missing hat. In today’s construction industry, protective gear is key. Technology has allowed much safer but functional clothing to protect workers as well as software to identify when a lack of protective gear is causing incidents.

Transport safety

If you are in the storage, manufacturing or wholesale industry you should be on the look out for injuries involving moving vehicles and transporting of products. These were shown to be the most common in these industries. In the image above there is little room to move, and any use of transportation would cause issues, this would be sure to show up on any incident report.

Construction danger

Today’s construction sites are safer, more secure and with plenty of signage. However in 1988, sites weren’t quite the same. This image presents an accident waiting to happen, something Airsweb’s risk assessment software would definitely pick up on.

Most companies will now assess any situation, involving either the public or the workforce, before it begins. Risk assessments are common practice and solutions such as Airsweb’s Pro-Active Safety System (PASS) promote awareness of health and safety across your organisation. In 1969 people were quite so aware of the need for health and safety.

It is clear to see just how far health and safety has come today. This is not just due to rules and regulations, but a much greater awareness of risks from the public and businesses, and a much more positive culture of safety.
